Description

Grand Marnier Buttercream is excellent on orange cake, grand marnier cake, chocolate cake and nut flavor cakes.

Grand Marnier is a delicious liqueur (80 proof) made of blended cognacs and distilled bitter orange. It can be drank neat or in cocktails. It is often used to make crepes. It can be found in most liquor stores.

Ingredients

1⁄2 c
grand marnier
1 lb
confectioners sugar (more or less according to consistency desired)
4 oz
butter
2 oz
vegetable shortening
1⁄4 c
Milk (skimmed or 2%)
1 t
Vanilla Extract (pure)

Instructions

  1. Mix the shortening and the (room temperature) butter together on medium speed until light and fluffy & well blended.
  2. Add the vanilla (adding it now stops the buttercream from becoming "yellow" in color). On slow speed mix until the vanilla is incorporated.
  3. Add the sifted powdered sugar (I always re sift mine no matter how many times it's been previously sifted!)
  4. 1/2 cup at a time & blend at a low/medium speed until incorporated and the buttercream is almost at spreading consistency. Now add the milk and blend on medium speed, add more powdered sugar if needed.
  5. Let the mixture go on a slow speed for about 10 minutes (the slower you mix it the whiter it gets without the use of white food color).
  6. Now, add the Grand Marnier SLOWLY and mix until well blended. Let it rest for a few minutes before applying to your cake. (Add more powdered sugar if the mixture is too thin for your liking).

Notes

This should fill and cover an 8" and 6" cake.
